24th Annual
USS Steinaker Reunion
by
Bill Keleher SOG2 ’61-’64
The 24th annual reunion of the USS Steinaker crew commenced on April 28, 2016 in Baltimore, MD. Even though I was early, a huge amount of the set up and preparation had previously been completed. Registration tables, banners to sign, packets to be distributed and balances to be collected were already set to meet the onslaught of reunion attendees. As usual, these tasks proceeded without a hitch under the very competent leadership of our organization officers.
Thursday evening, a cocktail party was held sponsored by Sally Cascini in honor of our dear departed shipmate Frank Cascini. This provided an informal setting for us to catch up with news since our last get together. There seemed to be quite a number of new faces this year and that is always a good thing. Our thanks to Sally for this very generous donation.
Friday morning we all boarded a bus for a tour of the US Naval Academy. Many of us had never been there before and this was quite exciting. Highlights included the crypt of John Paul Jones below the chapel and a short recital performed on the massive pipe organ. Those bass notes sure could make the building shake! A short walk brought us to the campus club where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. Back on the bus, we then drove to Fort McHenry to tour that facility. Even though most are knowledgable of the fact that the national anthem was inspired by the British attack on this fort, it is still quite moving to actually be standing where it all took place.
Friday evening started with another cocktail party, this one hosted by Frank and Christine Price, our local Baltimore members of the USS Steinaker family. The food and drink were excellent. I have to say that the conversation and reconnections were quite spirited at this event. Thanks to Frank and Christine for their generous donation.
The cocktail party was followed by an evening of comedy put on by the USS Steinaker Players. As usual, the talent always manages to surface, despite the claims of the participants. Rather than describe the event in detail, just click on the link below to see the finished product.

Many stars were born that night and will be enshrined in the ether forever. Obviously, this was the perfect end to a perfect day.
The usual business meeting was held Saturday morning. Details are available in the official report on this website under the heading “Reunion News.” The afternoon was left to personal time and many decided to tour the inner harbor. Some visited the aquarium and others just shopped ‘till they dropped. A very enjoyable day to be sure.
Dinner commenced at 6 p.m. but even though it was excellent, the buzz was all about the auction. Somehow this has evolved into one of the highlights of our event. Jim Bunch and I were our gregarious selves and we were able, with the generosity of our shipmates and families, to significantly improve our financial position. Halfway through the auction, time out was declared in order for me to bestow the “Stinky Award” to the winning actors and actresses. Click on the above link to see the actual ceremony at the end of the performances. By the time the last item had been sold, we were all pretty well exhausted. A fitting end to a terrific reunion and it just gets better and better!
Sunday is always a bit sad. Saying good-bye for another year is sometimes hard. It does remind us though, that we have all experienced something special. Our time on the Steinaker changed all of our lives. See you all next year in Nashville!
