The annual meeting of the USS STEINAKER Reunion Association was held on the 17th of September 2022 in Virginia Beach, VA with approximately 40 shipmates and ladies present.
Thursday night “Welcome Aboard Reception” was held in honor of Frank Cascini.
Meeting called to order by the Chairman, Frank Price. Elected officers present were Frank Price, Vice Chairman, Robert Ward and Secretary/Treasurer Ken Kohnen. Board of Directors present were Russ Noble and Jimmy Bunch. We also recognized 1 of our Commanding Officers: CAPT George Philipps 1974-1976 who was present at the reunion. Chairman Frank Price welcomed shipmates and noted the great attendance for the 2022 business meeting. The minutes were accepted as published in the annual newsletter. Received and approved the report of the Secretary/Treasurer after Linda Magaro and Bill Keleher audited the checking account.
Secretary/Treasurer Ken Kohnen made mention of the 75 shipmates who sent dues/donations in support of our shipmates. Well done!
Discussion was held concerning donations. A motion was made by shipmates to donate to the following organizations: Tin Can Sailor’s, Inc. $500.00, USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Association $500.00, Carolyn Combs FRA Auxiliary Scholarship Fund $500.00, and USS Orleck Naval Museum $500.00. Motion made by Jimmy Bunch and seconded by Joe Tucker to approve. Motion carried.
After discussion, there was a consensus that if the room night costs reached $200.00 a night, then most shipmates would still be able to attend future reunions.
Chairman, Frank Price discussed plans for the 2023 STEINAKER Reunion. Discussion about Mobile, AL; Dayton, OH; and Wilmington, NC were discussed and mentioned the dates would be after Labor Day in 2023.
Members present voted to hold the 2023 STEINAKER Reunion in Dayton, OH. The reunion dates will tentatively be after Labor Day and in the month of September, if feasible.
There was no further unfinished business. The Chairman moved to new business. The election of officers was held. Frank Price was nominated and elected as Chairman; Robert Ward was nominated and elected as Vice Chairman. Ken Kohnen was nominated and elected as Secretary/Treasurer. A vote was taken to maintain the current Board of Directors.
Chuck Spencer discussed the Steinaker parts that have been received for distribution to the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. It was also noted that the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. workday is normally in April and October. All are welcome to be part of the fun!
Banners and coffee mugs were presented to the following shipmates for their years of supporting the USS STEINAKER Reunion Association: Emery Haskell, Steve Cannon, Mick Mead, Harry Buzhardt, Chuck Travers and Herald Newnum. A hat was mailed to Larry Moody. Thank you for your continuou support!
Discussion was held about the Saturday night auction, the silent auction, and the 50/50 drawing. Our 50/50 winner was Ed Barry for $470.00. The Gift Card raffle had four winners: John Pechonis, Cindy Edwards, Joe Tucker and Ken Kohnen. The winners of 1 free room night were: Albert Tondora, Robert Wright, Vincent Jones, John Pechonis, Norman French and Joseph Tucker.
The formal business meeting was adjourned. After a five-minute break, shipmates gathered for introductions and acknowledgements by STEINAKER shipmates.
There being no further business the 2022 Annual Meeting of the USS STEINAKER Reunion Association adjourned until 2023.
Your support is greatly appreciated and hopefully we will see you all at the next reunion.
To everyone participating in the auction your generosity was greatly appreciated. We raised over $3,300.

Reunion 2022 by

The 29th reunion of the U.S.S. Steinaker crew took place this year in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The turnout was better than expected and we are usually surprised by the number of “first timers” that show up. All the newbies expressed surprise and delight in seeing shipmates from long ago.
Thursday evening we enjoyed a very nice reception which was sponsored by Sally Cascini in honor of her departed husband Frank. It gave us a chance to meet and greet both new and old shipmates.
Friday morning we had a very early call out for our tour. Buses loading at 7:15 was a bit problematic for some of us. Since there were several attendees in wheelchairs, every effort was made to make the ride easy for them. Unfortunately one of the buses had a shock absorber problem on the way to the museum and this made the ride most uncomfortable. We spent the next couple of hours at the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown Va. Quite the spectacular display. Most wished there was more time to read and absorb additional information. By the time we were ready to leave, the bus had been repaired and our trip back was topped off with lunch at a fine restaurant called Stripers.
At 7 p.m. our group was treated to an improv show starring our very own Steinaker players. All the actors were in great form and the selection was difficult but Ann Marie Cannon, Cindy Jacobs, David Magaro and John Pechonis won the coveted “Stinky” awards, handsome gold trophies, for their fine performances. And thus ended the Friday evening festivities.
Saturday morning came way too early for this reporter so I missed a portion of the business meeting. Suffice it to say, next year we will be meeting in Dayton Ohio, the hometown of one Martin Tanner. The first person to e-mail me with the most comprehensive story of Mr. Tanner will receive accolades at the reunion next year.
The rest of the day was spent in preparation for the big banquet. This year we had over 120 shipmates and family in attendance. As in the past, the generosity of all was apparent by the quality and breadth of the items donated for the auction. This enabled Jim Bunch and I to extract some cash from wallets and purses that have not been opened in quite some time! As usual, there was the regular battle over the Montmorency cherries. For some reason people abandon all common sense when this item comes up! The other donation which caused a stir was a simple silver brooch showing two sitting cats. The audience seemed to lose its collective mind when this item was offered. All in all, a very successful sale and we take this opportunity to thank all in attendance for their generosity and exuberant participation.
So until we meet again in Dayton, I bid you a fond adieu.
