The annual meeting of the USS STEINAKER Reunion Association was held on the 16th of September 2023 in Dayton, OH with approximately 35 shipmates and ladies present.
Thursday night “Welcome Aboard Reception” was held in honor of Frank Cascini.
Meeting called to order by the Chairman, Frank Price. Elected officers present were Frank Price, Vice Chairman, Robert Ward and Secretary/Treasurer Ken Kohnen. Board of Directors present were Russ Noble and Jimmy Bunch. We also recognized 1 of our Commanding Officers: CAPT George Philipps 1974-1976 who was present at the reunion. Chairman Frank Price welcomed shipmates and noted the great attendance for the 2023 business meeting. The minutes were accepted as published in the annual newsletter. Received and approved the report of the Secretary/Treasurer after John Ives and Art Ridgway audited the checking account.
Secretary/Treasurer Ken Kohnen made mention of the 47 shipmates who sent dues/donations in support of our shipmates. Well done!
Discussion was held concerning donations. A motion was made by shipmates to donate to the following organizations: Tin Can Sailor’s, Inc. $500.00, USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Association $500.00, and USS Orleck Naval Museum $500.00. Motion made by Jimmy Bunch and seconded by Joe Tucker to approve. Motion carried.
Chairman, Frank Price discussed plans for the 2024 STEINAKER Reunion. Discussion about Mobile, AL; Dayton, OH; Albany, NY; Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Virginia Beach, VA; Charleston, SC; Ashville, NC; and Wilmington, NC were discussed.
Members present voted to hold the STEINAKER Reunion in Virginia Beach, VA as the primary location and Baltimore, MD as the secondary location for all future reunions. The reunion dates will be after Labor Day and in the month of September and/or October.
There was no further unfinished business. The Chairman moved to new business. The election of officers was held. Frank Price was nominated and elected as Chairman; Robert Ward was nominated and elected as Vice Chairman. Ken Kohnen was nominated and elected as Secretary/Treasurer. A vote was taken to maintain the current Board of Directors.
Chuck Spencer discussed the Steinaker parts that have been received for distribution to the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. It was also noted that the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. workday is normally in April and October. All are welcome to be part of the fun!
Banners were presented to Bruce Macdonald, David Magaro, Eric Pfeiffer, and George Sparks.
Discussion was held about the Saturday night auction, the silent auction, and the 50/50 drawing. Our 50/50 winner was Eileen Ridgway for $318.00. The Gift Card raffle had four winners: Harry Buzhardt, John Woynicz (twice), and Cathy Pettigrew. The winners of 1 free room night were: John Ives, Joe Sanders, and Bruce Macdonald.
Shipmates were reminded that all newsletters will be sent out by email from here on out.
The formal business meeting was adjourned. After a five-minute break, shipmates gathered for introductions and acknowledgements by STEINAKER shipmates.
There being no further business the 2023 Annual Meeting of the USS STEINAKER Reunion Association adjourned until 2024.
